Kite fishing is a spectacular and highly effective sport fishing technique, especially for targeting surface-feeding predators. It involves using a specially designed kite, attached to a line, to keep one or more live baits on the water’s surface without them being disturbed by the boat or the main fishing line.
The kite positions the baits at a distance while allowing them to swim naturally, perfectly imitating a vulnerable prey. This method is particularly popular for attracting species such as tuna, trevally, sailfish, marlin, and mahi-mahi.
The main advantage of kite fishing is discretion: the bait swims on the surface, several dozen meters from the boat, minimizing disturbances and maximizing the chances of triggering a strike. When a fish attacks, the line is released from the clip attached to the kite, allowing the angler to set the hook and fight the fish directly.
Used for decades in tournaments and by experienced captains, kite fishing combines precision, technique, and adrenaline. It is ideal in areas rich in surface predators and during suitable weather, with enough wind to keep the kite aloft.
